Guy on the 7 bus gave me a free umbrella during a downpour

Last month I got caught in that sudden storm near downtown and this older guy just handed me his extra umbrella before he got off at 15th street. Didn't even ask for it back or say much, just nodded and stepped out into the rain himself. Has anyone else had a stranger do something unexpectedly helpful on their commute like that?

Bet he just wanted an excuse to take a stroll in the rain and look cool doing it. Classic move.

Three blocks from my place there's a guy who walks his Great Dane in every single downpour, rain or shine, even during that freak hailstorm last spring. @gibson.robert you're probably right about the cool factor, but I also think there's something about being the only person out there in the wet, quiet streets that makes you feel like you're in a movie or something. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather stay dry and watch from the window. Still, I get the appeal even if I don't totally agree with it.

Keep a spare umbrella in your bag from now on, @gibson.robert - that's how you become the guy who hands one off. One of those cheap folding ones takes up almost no room and you'll be surprised how often you end up being the hero.
