My bus broke down on I-35 last Tuesday and I had to walk for help

I was on the 7:15 AM express from Round Rock to downtown Austin when the engine started smoking near the Braker Lane exit. The driver pulled over and told us we'd be waiting at least an hour for a replacement. Has anyone else had a bus die on them in a sketchy spot and had to figure out what to do?

Wait, would you really want to walk two miles on the shoulder of I-35 though? That stretch near Braker Lane is a nightmare with zero shoulder space in some spots and cars flying by at 75 miles an hour. I'd rather stay put near the busted bus where it's visible and other people are around than risk getting clipped by some distracted driver texting behind the wheel. Plus that grass shoulder you mentioned is probably full of trash, broken glass, and who knows what else from all the road debris.

That happened to me on 35 near Temple back in 2018. I walked about 2 miles to a gas station and called a friend because my phone battery was almost dead. Now I keep a portable charger and a small flashlight in my work bag. Also I always tell someone my route and timing before I leave, so if this happens again at least someone knows where to look. If you are stuck on a busy highway like that, stay off the road and walk on the grass shoulder if there is one.
