PSA: guy on the 7:15 Metra out of Aurora tried the 'door close' button scam on me yesterday
So yesterday morning on the 7:15 Metra train out of Aurora, some guy in a gray hoodie stands right by the doors and keeps jamming the button so they stay open. Train sits there 4 extra minutes and he's watching everyone get mad at the conductor. Turns out he does this so his buddy can board late and squeeze on without paying, and I saw the same two guys do it again on the 5:40 home. I started just standing in the next car over and guess what, we pulled out on time both trips. If you see a dude hovering by the doors not moving, just walk to another car, it's not worth the headache. Anyone else seen this move on the BNSF line or is it just my route?
That door close button doesn't actually do anything on Metra cars, it's just there to make people feel better. The conductor controls the doors from the cab, so no passenger can hold up the train by mashing that button. What probably happened is the conductor was already running late or waiting on a signal, and the guy just happened to be standing there when it lined up. Not saying the dude wasn't sketchy, but the button scam part doesn't really work the way you're describing. Either way walking to another car is solid advice if someone's acting weird by the doors.
