Some guy clipped my mirror on the 405 last Tuesday and just kept driving

I was sitting in bumper to bumper on the 405 around 5 pm last Tuesday when some dude in a beat up Civic sideswiped my passenger mirror and took off without even slowing down. Now I'm stuck paying a $250 deductible because I couldn't get his license plate in time. Why do people think they can just wreck your stuff and drive away like nothing happened?

Man that really sucks. I had almost the exact same thing happen to me last year on the 10 freeway. What worked for me was I went back to the spot the next day at the same time and checked if any businesses had cameras pointing at the road. There was a gas station that caught the whole thing on their security footage and the owner was nice enough to let me see it. I got the plate number from that and my insurance ended up waiving the deductible after I showed them the video. So if you remember roughly where it happened it might be worth checking.

Huh, I always figured businesses would just brush you off too but hearing that the gas station guy actually helped out makes me reconsider. I guess it really depends on the owner and how you ask, some people are way more chill than I gave them credit for. This is definitely making me think twice about just giving up if something like that happens to me.

Is there any guarantee the gas station owner would even be cool about letting you see their footage though? I mean, a lot of places around here are super strict about that stuff, especially if it's not their problem. They might just say "sorry, call the cops" and not bother. Plus even if you get the plate, the cops might not do anything with it unless someone got hurt. Insurance companies can be real stingy about waiving deductibles too, even with video proof. Idk, maybe it's just me but I feel like you'd be wasting a whole day for a long shot.
