That conversation on the 7 train about patience hit different
Some older guy told me he's been riding the same line for 40 years and still finds something new to notice every day, and I realized I've been zoning out on my phone the whole time ignoring this whole city. Has anyone else ever had a random stranger just drop a perspective on you like that?

Did that guy happen to mention the little details you start noticing after years of the same commute? I had a cab driver once tell me he could read neighborhoods by their potholes, and now I can't stop looking at the pavement whenever I'm walking around Brooklyn. It's weird how one offhand comment can mess with your whole way of seeing things.

That bit about reading neighborhoods by their potholes is funny... because it's actually the cracks in the sidewalk that tell you more. Potholes are just bad roads, but the cracks show you how old the tree roots are and what kind of soil's underneath.
