The 7am express bus gamble finally paid off, sort of
I used to skip the 7:05 express because it always seemed packed and the regular route got me to work by 8:30 anyway, but last Tuesday I squeezed on and we hit zero red lights through downtown Portland. The driver took a shortcut past the steel bridge that shaved 9 minutes off my usual time and I got a seat near the back for once. Is this just luck or do express buses actually use different timing patterns that I should be tracking?

The express routes do run on different timing patterns, but it is not just about the schedule. They skip certain stops and take different streets that avoid the worst intersections. Been riding TriMet for years and the 7:05 is a gamble, but when it works, it really works. If you want to track it, the transit app shows real time updates and you can see which runs have been hitting the green lights lately.
