The Q train at 7:42am on a Tuesday taught me something about rush hour I never expected
So I've been riding the Q train into Manhattan from Brooklyn for about 3 years now, and I thought I had it all figured out. Stand near the back, avoid eye contact, headphones in, done. But a couple weeks ago on a Tuesday, I got to the platform at 7:42am and there was this older guy with a folding chair just sitting there reading a paperback. Not on the train, on the platform. I asked him what the deal was and he said he's been doing it for 6 years because the 7:45 express is always packed but the 7:52 local has empty seats if you board at the second car. I tried it the next morning and he was right, I got a seat for the first time in months. The crazy part is nobody else on the platform seemed to notice or care. Now I'm wondering what other little commute secrets are hiding in plain sight that I've been walking past every day. Has anyone else figured out a specific car or time that just works better on their line?
