Used to cram onto the 7 train every morning in Queens, now I take the LIRR from Forest Hills and it's a whole different world

Switched about 4 months ago when my office moved from midtown to near Penn. The 7 was always packed, standing room only, felt like a sardine. Now I get a seat, can actually read a book, and the commute is 12 minutes shorter. But the monthly pass hurts my wallet - jumped from $127 to $225. Anyone else make a similar switch and regret the cost or is the peace of mind worth it?

Tbh the cost difference is brutal but you're paying for your sanity back. Being packed on the 7 every morning sounds like a nightmare compared to reading a book in peace. I'd rather pay extra than start my day feeling like a sardine.

and that's exactly the thing i've been noticing more and more lately. it's not just about trains or commute, it's about how much we're all willing to pay for just a little bit of SPACE and quiet in our day. i see people pay extra for coffee shops where they can sit alone, pay for parking garages instead of street parking, pay for early morning gym sessions just to avoid the crowds. we're all basically bidding on PEACE now, and it's only going to get worse. the really sad part is that it used to be free just to exist without someone's elbow in your ribs. now you gotta wallet up just to have a moment to yourself.
