A customer's simple fix saved me from a full motherboard swap
I was sure a client's desktop needed a new board after it kept shutting down. An older guy who runs a small shop in town told me, 'Check the standoffs, I've seen them short a board before.' I pulled it apart and sure enough, one standoff was touching a trace it shouldn't have. After I fixed that, the machine ran fine. Has anyone else had a simple hardware thing like that trick them into thinking it was a major part failure?

Forget the standoff, that old guy is a genius.

Hold on now, genius is a strong word. That "standoff" was reckless and put everyone in danger. Real genius would have found a clever way to avoid the whole mess, not just win it by being the most stubborn guy in the room. He got lucky it didn't blow up in his face. Calling that smart is like praising someone for playing chicken with a train and jumping off the tracks at the last second.
