Can we talk about thermal paste application methods

I used to just blob it on and hope for the best, building PCs for friends out of my garage in Toledo. Switched to the pea method about 2 years ago after a bad batch of 5 CPUs started hitting 85c idle. Now I use a tiny dot right in the middle, haven't had a heat issue since. Anyone else find a method that works better for specific CPUs like the Ryzen 7 chips?

Man that pea method has been a lifesaver for me too but it got me thinking how a lot of stuff in life follows that same principle. Like when I'm seasoning a steak or even just pouring coffee grounds into a filter too much in one spot and it overflows or burns. A little bit right in the middle spreads out evenly when the pressure is applied. Same with putting too much salt on a dish you can't take it back but a small pinch goes a long way. It's funny how the idea of less being more keeps popping up in different places if you pay attention.

Two years ago I was building a little wooden planter box for my wife and I kept trying to hammer nails straight into the wood from the side. They kept splitting the board every single time. Then my neighbor came over and showed me how a tiny little pilot hole - just a quick twist with a drill bit smaller than the nail - completely solved it. That little bit of prep work in the middle with nothing but patience made the whole thing hold together without cracking. Same principle with pouring concrete in a post hole, you dump it all in one spot and it clumps up like a rock but sprinkle it gently across the whole hole and it sets perfectly even. It's almost like reality has this built in rule about focused intensity being a trap and scattered gentle effort being the actual way things work.
