Finally caught why my thermal paste jobs were failing after 6 months
Turns out I was spreading it way too thick, basically using it like peanut butter instead of a thin layer. A buddy in a Dallas shop pointed it out when I asked why his builds run cooler than mine, and now I check temps before and after every single job - anyone else make this mistake for years before realizing?

My buddy swears by the rice grain method, one dot in the center.

My buddy swears by the rice grain method, one dot in the center. Last time I tried that I got a blob of paste squishing out the side of my CPU and ran it for a whole month before noticing it was all over the socket pins. Had to pull the whole motherboard and clean it with isopropyl and a soft brush, took me an hour. That shop guy you mentioned sounds like he knows his stuff though, I might have to hit up my local guy in Austin for a second opinion next time.
