Had a client's RAID 5 array drop two drives on the same Friday afternoon, that was a fun call
Got a call around 3pm last Friday from a dentist's office in Plano, their server was making a clicking noise and the front desk software was frozen. I pulled the box and saw drive 2 and drive 4 both amber, which is basically the worst case for a RAID 5, and I knew I wasnt gonna rebuild that on site. Ended up cloning the two dead drives with ddrescue over about 9 hours, got 98 percent of the sectors back, and rebuilt the array. Lesson is simple, verify the backups actually restore before you need them, and dont trust a RAID 5 with drives that all shipped in the same batch. Anyone else had two drives fail on you at once, and did you go to RAID 6 after or just move to a different setup?
