I stopped imaging drives with my bench dock and switched to booting off a Linux stick, cut my job times in half
Did three data recovery jobs in one week at my shop in Reno, and the dock kept hanging on drives with bad sectors, so I yanked the drive and booted straight off a Ubuntu USB with ddrescue instead. Cloning a 500GB drive that used to take 6 hours with 4 frozen retries now runs in under 2 hours with real logs of every bad block. Anyone else ditched their hardware cloner for software, or am I late to this party?
The part nobody talks about is power. Booting off a USB stick means your whole clone depends on that one box staying awake, and a brownout in the middle of a run will leave you guessing where it stopped. A dock at least keeps its own little power path separate from your OS. If you start doing these off a laptop, run it on battery or put it on a UPS, because ddrescue logs are worthless if the machine dies at hour five.
