The difference 6 months of logging made for my network troubleshooting
I started keeping a daily log of every weird network issue I saw at clients' places back in March. At first it felt like extra work with no payoff. But yesterday I had a customer with random dropouts on a Friday afternoon, and I flipped back to my notes from April. Saw the exact same symptom pattern timing and realized it was a dodgy switch port that only acted up under load. That log saved me probably 3 hours of re-testing and swapping cables. Has anyone else tried tracking repeat issues like this over time?

Wait, did you read that one blog post by that network engineer who said logging saved his bacon on a DNS issue? I read it a few weeks back and it made me start keeping a little notebook by my desk too. Yeah, totally agree with you here, having a history of patterns like that is a lifesaver because your brain forgets the details so fast. It is wild how much time you waste chasing the same ghost twice when you could have just looked at an old note.
