The senior tech swore by thermal paste refresh, cost me a whole workday
Last month a veteran tech at my shop in Austin told me to repaste every laptop that comes in for a cleaning, no exceptions. I followed his advice on a Dell that was running fine just to be safe, and opened it up only to find the original paste was perfectly applied. After reassembly the temps jumped 15 degrees and I spent 4 hours reseating everything to fix my own screw-up. He meant well but blanket rules like that ignore the fact that some units are sealed better than others. Anyone else ever break a working machine by following 'standard practice' over common sense?

Exactly, blanket rules like that treat every machine like it came off the same line, which they just don't. The senior tech probably had good luck with older Dells that used crappy paste from the factory, but newer ones are sealed way better. Your story is a perfect example of why you check first and touch only what's actually broken, because a clean working machine beats a shiny mistake every time.
