TIL I was thermal pasting laptops all wrong for 5 years

I used to just blob a big pea-sized dot on laptop CPUs and call it done. Then last Tuesday I had a Dell Latitude that kept hitting 95c under load even after repasting. I pulled the heatsink off and saw the paste had squeezed out unevenly, leaving half the die bare. That's when I realized the pea method works fine for desktops with IHS, but for bare die laptops you need a thin spread across the whole chip. I've been doing it wrong since I started in this trade back in 2019. Checked a few forum threads and a YouTube teardown and yep, the spread method dropped my temps by 12c on that Dell. Anyone else have a similar wake-up call with thermal paste application?

Dude this hit me hard because I literally had the exact same moment a few months ago. I was thermal pasting this old HP laptop and the temps were just not dropping no matter how much paste I put on. Thought I was going crazy until I watched a Gamers Nexus video and he explained the whole bare die vs IHS thing. Switched to the spread method with a little spatula and my temps dropped like 15c instantly. Its wild how long we both wasted time doing it wrong when the solution was that simple. Makes you wonder what other basic stuff we are all messing up without knowing.

Wait, are we all just out here making the same mistakes and nobody tells us until years later? I still catch myself doing dumb stuff with PC building that I thought I had figured out.
