Watching a client's server room flood in Tampa made me rethink my backup strategy.
They lost a drive in their RAID 5 array during the recovery, which took down everything. Has anyone else had a RAID fail during a restore, and what's your go-to backup check now?

Yeah, losing a drive during a RAID 5 rebuild is like the worst case scenario. I mean, that's the whole point it's supposed to handle. After seeing something similar, my go-to check is to actually test restoring a backup to a different piece of hardware, not just check that the backup file exists. Idk, maybe it's just me but I don't trust a backup until I've pulled a real file out of it under pressure.

Yeah, pulling a real file under pressure is the only real test, @murphy.taylor. I've seen a backup check pass, but the actual restore just... failed quietly.

Totally feel that. A backup you can't actually restore is just a lie.
