Hot take: A client's garden hose talk taught me to measure water right

Honestly, I was pouring a small slab for a backyard step. Tbh, the lady who lived there walked over with her hose asking if I needed more water. Ngl, I always just added water until it looked good, but she wondered how I knew the exact amount. I told her too much makes concrete weak, and she said her dad used to bake bread and it was all about precise ratios. That stuck with me big time. Now I use a bucket for water every mix, thinking like a baker. My slabs come out smoother and crack less. Honestly, that simple chat made a huge difference in my work.

That baking comparison is spot on. It’s crazy how many trades just go by feel when a simple measure would make things last way longer. I see it with painters thinning their paint or guys mixing drywall mud too wet. Getting the ratio right is what separates a hack from someone who actually knows their stuff.

But isn't that overthinking it? Plenty of pros eyeball it and their work holds up fine.

My buddy's deck collapsed after he eyeballed the joist spacing, @ray816.
