That job in Portland last spring taught me about curing blankets

I was finishing a big driveway in Portland and the temp dropped way faster than I expected overnight. Had to scramble to get curing blankets on before the frost hit. Now I always keep two extra blankets in the truck just in case. Anyone else had to deal with unexpected weather changes on a pour?

Drove all night once to beat a cold front coming through Colorado. Got the pour done at 4am but the blankets I had were too thin for the wind. Ended up layering tarps over burlap sacks from the lumber yard. Looked like a patchwork mess but the concrete cured fine. Now I keep heavy insulated blankets and a roll of 6 mil plastic in the trailer at all times. Better to have it and not need it.

A buddy of mine tried the same thing up in Montana last winter. He thought old moving blankets would be enough, but the wind just cut right through them and the concrete started frosting around the edges by sunrise. He spent the whole next day chipping out bad spots and patching them, and now he keeps a dedicated "cold weather" bin in his truck bed with proper blankets and stakes.
