Walnut finish, been screwing up trowel angle for years

Finally got called out by a homeowner in Columbus. Guy watched me float a patio and said, 'You're dragging the trowel flat, not tilted.' I always thought flat was right. He was a retired finisher. Tried his way, tilting it forward about 15 degrees. My cream came up way faster and the walnut finish stayed even. Feel dumb. The burnish on my last 5 driveways was probably patchy because of this. Has anyone else had a basic habit that took a stranger to correct?
