Watched a guy in Wichita finish a 40x40 slab with a magnesium float and no edger back in April
Called him crazy but he said the trick is hitting it while it's still green enough to leave a fingerprint, and the edges came out cleaner than my 12 years of edger work, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this or am I about to mess up my next driveway pour in Salina next weekend.
Magnesium float at green stage is basically cheating once you figure out the timing. The float pulls up that cream layer and lets you work it right to the forms without the edge tearing out like it does when you edge too late. Trick is you have to keep the float flat and not dig the corners, then come back with just a touch of pressure on the edge line itself. Your driveway in Salina is a different animal than a 40x40 slab though, because driveways have way more edge footage and that green window is short on a hot day. I'd pour smaller sections or keep a kid with a hose on the edges so you're not chasing set time. Worst case you still own an edger, so give it a shot on the first section and see how it sets up before you commit the whole pour.
