Right? It's wild how powerful just listening is. People jump to give advice or tell their own story. @king.aaron is onto something with asking for details. Saw it last week with my neighbor. She was stressed about her kid, and her friend just said "that sounds really hard" instead of offering solutions. Made all the difference. We're so trained to fix things, but sometimes just hearing someone out is the fix.
