Always hated peanut butter and jelly sandwiches until my nephew made me try one his way

I was at my sister's house in Phoenix last Saturday watching her kids. My nephew, who's 8, insisted I try his PB&J. He had put crunchy peanut butter on one side and strawberry jam on the other, but he also added a thin layer of cream cheese in the middle. I thought it sounded gross but he looked so serious about it. I took a bite and honestly it worked - the cream cheese cut the sweetness just enough. Now I'm sitting here eating my third PB&J this week. Has anyone else tried weird sandwich combos that actually turned out good?

Oh boy, I had to chime in here. I'm 54 and I've been experimenting with weird sandwich combos since the 80s. That cream cheese trick is actually a classic deli move but most people never think to put it in a PB&J. One time I accidentally grabbed honey mustard instead of regular mustard for a ham sandwich and it was a total game changer. The key with these combos is finding something that adds a new texture or temperature, not just another flavor competing for attention.

Oh man, that honey mustard thing is real! I had a similar oops moment but with ranch dressing on a turkey and swiss. Thought it was gonna be nasty but it was actually kind of perfect, the creaminess just worked. Now I can't even eat a cold cut sandwich without trying to sneak some kind of weird sauce in there. My family thinks I've lost my mind but they're the ones missing out.
