My grandma served me ketchup on scrambled eggs in 1998 and I still put it on everything
Back when I was maybe 9 years old, my grandma in Bakersfield made me scrambled eggs and put ketchup on them without even asking. I pitched a fit at the table because I thought it was gross, but she told me to just try it or go hungry. I ate it, and honestly it was pretty good, so for the next 25 years I kept doing it. My wife thinks I'm nuts and calls it a toddler move every single time I squeeze some Heinz on my plate. Then a couple years back I went to this diner in Portland that charged $16 for scrambled eggs and they put a fancy tomato jam on top instead. It hit me that ketchup and tomato jam are basically cousins, just one costs 30 cents and one costs a whole paycheck. Now I'm wondering if anybody else grew up on a combo like this and still catches grief for it as a grown adult, or is it just me and my grandma's bad influence?
Man, I heard a thing on the radio about how ketchup is basically a chutney when you break it down, sweet and sour and all cooked together. So your grandma and that Portland diner were on the same page, just a few decades apart. I grew up dipping grilled cheese in ketchup and my wife still gives me a look, so you are not alone out there. Bad influence or not, grandma knew what she was doing.
