My uncle said Ritz crackers on chili is a crime, and I almost believed him until I tried it myself at his own cookout
Last Friday my uncle Dale hosted a cookout in Toledo and he went on this big rant about how putting crackers in chili is something only kids and sad people do. But then I watched him crush up a whole sleeve of saltines into his second bowl when he thought nobody was looking, which honestly cracked me up more than anything. So is cracker chili actually good or did we all just get bullied into thinking it is not?
Watched a grown man trash talk crackers for ten minutes and then hide behind a cooler to eat them is honestly the most Toledo thing I've ever heard. In my experience the whole "crackers in chili is a crime" thing comes from people who are way too worried about looking like adults at a cookout. It's a bowl of beans and meat, not a job interview, so who cares if you add some crunch to it. Your uncle basically proved the point himself, the crackers are good, he just didn't want to say it out loud. Crush them up or drop them whole, either way it works and nobody is going to kick you out of Ohio over it. Take this with a grain of salt but I bet half the people at that cookout were doing the exact same thing when Dale wasn't looking.
