The gas station hot dog debate at midnight in Flagstaff changed my snacking rules

I was rolling through Flagstaff around 2 AM last Tuesday, dead tired and starving. Stopped at a Shell station and grabbed two hot dogs from the roller, one with chili and one plain. The chili dog was amazing, a perfect greasy comfort bomb. But the plain one was like eating rubber, all sad and shriveled. It got me thinking about how we treat snack foods that are basically the same base item but prepared different ways. Now I'm stuck wondering if the condiments and toppings just mask bad quality, or if they actually elevate the food itself. So like, is a loaded nacho cheese dog better than a plain dog because it's doctored up, or because the plain one just sucks more? Has anyone else had two versions of the same snack and felt totally different about each one?

Man you’re really overthinking gas station hot dogs at 2 AM. The plain one was just old and dry, that's the whole story.

The dry one had better flavor because the heat just cooked all the grease out of it.
