22 years living in the Midwest and I've watched people treat ketchup on a hot dog like you just insulted their grandma. @kelly968 is right, that whole "never ketchup" rule is basically Chicago beef dressed up as manners. I started noticing the same pattern everywhere - people gatekeep stuff that's totally fine just because that's how their local tradition does it. Like how some people lose their minds over pineapple on pizza or putting ranch on wings, when really it's all just toppings. The gatekeeping rarely holds up outside of that one specific city or group of friends who decided their way was the only way.

Ketchup on hot dogs is basically the same energy as putting hot sauce on pizza - people just have weird food gatekeeping rules that don't actually hold up. The whole thing started as a regional pride thing in Chicago, but now it's treated like universal law when it's really just a preference. If ketchup was actually that bad for hot dogs, the condiment industry wouldn't have made it the #1 topping for decades.
