A neighbor's free color fix request opened my eyes to setting limits

I told her our training and products cost a lot (it's not just playing with hair). Doing free jobs hurts all of us who work hard in this trade.

Actually I've found most people get it if you explain it right.

So was this the first time you had to shut down a request like that, or had you been getting smaller asks from people for a while before this one finally made you set the hard rule? I feel like sometimes friends and neighbors are the worst for assuming your skills are just a hobby.

Oh man, when you said friends and neighbors assume it's a hobby, that's so true. @paul_fisher19, I had a buddy ask me to build a whole website for his side business because he thought I just did it for fun on weekends. Another time, my neighbor knocked on my door at 10 PM wanting free tech support for her phone, like I'm just on call. I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but that stuff adds up. It finally got to me when my cousin expected me to edit a video for her wedding for free, and that's when I had to set the hard rule.
