Decided between old-school marcel irons and modern flat irons for curls

I had to choose between my trusty marcel curling iron from beauty school (you know, the spring clamp kind) and a newer flat iron for doing beach waves on a client last week. I went with the flat iron because she wanted loose, undone waves and I figured it'd be faster, but honestly the ends came out a bit crimped and I had to redo two sections. Has anyone else made that switch and regretted it, or do you stick with one tool for most curl patterns?

Stick with the marcel iron for most curls myself. The flat irons give me the same trouble with crimped ends every time, especially on clients with finer hair. Did you use any product to protect the ends before you clamped down, or do you think it's more about the technique?

Three drops of chi silk infusion before clamping saved my ends more times than I can count @victorbutler.
