Paid $80 for a fancy hair steamer and it barely did anything

I mean, everyone in this sub seems to swear by them for deep conditioning, but after 3 uses I just felt like my regular hot towel routine worked better. Has anyone else tried one and regretted the purchase?

You probably weren't using it right. Those steamers need you to actually sit there for a full 20 minutes with the hood on, not just a quick 5 minute blast. My hair dresser told me the steam opens up the cuticle way more than just heat from a towel, which can actually trap moisture instead of letting it sink in. Eight dollars for a cheap one from Amazon worked better for me than a hot towel ever did, but you have to use a deep conditioner underneath and let it sit while the steam does its thing. Maybe give it another shot with the right technique before writing off the whole concept.

I really do see where you're coming from @uma_baker88, but I gotta disagree on this one. My $30 steamer from Target never gave me results any better than a hot towel, and I timed myself with a stopwatch for a full 20 minutes under that hood. The steam just made my hair feel limp and frizzy instead of soft, and I even tried three different deep conditioners like you said. Towels are just easier for me to control the heat and moisture without feeling like I'm in a science experiment. Maybe some peoples hair just reacts different to steam vs heat, you know?
