Went to a salon in Brooklyn and saw a stylist using a flat iron from 2005

I popped into this spot called Hair Whispers off Bedford Ave last Saturday to grab some product. This girl was straightening with this ancient iron that was all rusted and had peeling plates, I couldn't believe it. She said it was her 'lucky iron' she's had for 18 years and refuses to toss it. Has anyone else ever run into a tool that old still being used?

Is it possible that "lucky" is just code for "I can't afford a new one" in this economy? Old tools can develop hot spots that fry hair unevenly, which isn't doing anyone any favors. Maybe her luck is really just everyone else's bad hair day.

Honestly her clients are probably just too shy to say their hair smells like burnt pennies after.
