Caught the safety guy talking about crane signals at the shop

Heard this older operator at the union hall in Baltimore say hand signals are basically useless now because everyone just uses radios. I get that radios are faster but last week I had my battery die mid lift on a 50 ton job and had to fall back on signals. My apprentice didn't know half of them. Has anyone else noticed newer guys skipping the basics just because they got a radio?

Wait, aren't hand signals still an official OSHA requirement, not just some old timer thing? I get that radios are the way to go normally, but the standard says you gotta have a backup plan for when the radio craps out on you. Sounds like that apprentice needs a quick refresher before he causes a real problem on site.

Respectfully radios work fine 99% of the time.
