Foreman swore by his two finger trick for boom swings, nearly dropped a load in Denver

Old Bill, our site foreman, kept telling me to rest two fingers light on the joystick during a swing so I'd feel the load drift before it got hairy. Last Tuesday on a job in Denver, I tried it with a 12,000 lb concrete panel and sure enough the cable started twisting weird, caught it a full second before the alarm went off. He's got 30 years on me so I figured why not, but honestly I thought it was old timer nonsense. Then this morning I did a quick empty hook spin without the fingers and the thing whipped around like a fish on a line. The trick ain't about control, it's about noticing the small stuff early. Anyone else got a weird old school habit from a mentor that actually works on site?

That "noticing the small stuff early" part is the whole secret, once you feel it you never go back.
