Got a new Manitowoc 16000 last week and learned a lesson fast

We took delivery of a used Manitowoc 16000 at the yard outside Houston last Tuesday. First lift with a 40 ton load I set the outriggers on some soft ground I thought was solid. That machine sank about 3 inches on the right rear pad before I caught it. Took us 4 hours with cribbing to level it back out. Who else has had a close call because of bad ground conditions under the mats?

Hang on though, is it always better to catch things early? Sometimes running a system hot for a while exposes weak spots that would've failed later anyway, and you can fix them all at once instead of patching one thing and then another thing a week later. My buddy's server had a minor issue and he replaced a cheap fan, but a month later the power supply died and took out two drives with it. If he'd let the first thing cook off, maybe he would've spotted the real problem. Not saying you're wrong to fix it, just saying early fixes can hide bigger problems.
