Had a main hoist brake fail on me during a pick in Tacoma last Tuesday
The load drifted about two feet before I could get it under control with the aux, which was a real wake-up call. What's your go-to weekly check for brake lining wear now?

Glad you got it under control. That two foot drift is the kind of thing that sticks with you. My weekly check is simple now. I pull the inspection covers and physically measure the lining with calipers, looking for even wear. I also check for any shiny spots or heat cracks on the drum itself. It adds ten minutes to the walk-around, but it's time well spent.

Used to just eyeball it from the ground, figured if it looked thick it was fine. After a close call in Seattle last year, I measure the lining every Monday now. Found a worn spot I would have missed otherwise. What thickness do you guys consider the absolute minimum before a change?

What calipers do you use for that, the cheap plastic ones or something more heavy duty?
