Heard a guy at the parts counter say he never lubes his hoist cables

Honestly, I was picking up a new shackle at the supplier and this older operator just dropped that like it was nothing. He said he's been running the same cable for 12 years on a Grove RT, just dry as a bone. Has anyone here actually tried skipping the lube entirely or is that guy just asking for a snap?

Twelve years dry on a Grove RT? That's insane, man. Ngl, that cable has to be corroding from the inside out with no lube to keep moisture out of the core. I've seen dry cables start developing little rust spots between the strands within a couple years on a crane that sits outside, let alone one actually working. Tbh, that guy is probably running on borrowed time and a ton of luck. I'd bet the cable feels like sandpaper when you run your hand over it.

You're not wrong @wright.jesse, but I've seen a few guys get away with it if the crane stays inside a heated shop most of its life and barely lifts. Mileage varies way more than people give credit for.
