I finally gave up on the 'always use the load chart' rule for a small lift

Everyone says never eyeball it, but we had a 500 lb pallet of shingles to get on a low roof. I knew the crane could handle way more, so I just went for it instead of pulling the chart and doing the math. Saved us maybe 20 minutes and nothing went wrong, but I'm still waiting for someone to call me out on it lol. Anyone else ever skip the formalities on a tiny, obvious job?

Patking is right about rules getting broken bit by bit. The real cost isn't the 20 minutes you saved, it's training your own brain to accept shortcuts. Next time the load isn't so obvious, that habit is already set.

Honestly that's how most rules get broken, one small shortcut at a time. You know the math is on your side so it feels silly to do it. It works until the one time your guess is wrong.
