Overheard a foreman in Phoenix call a 30-ton pick 'light work'

He was pushing a crew to skip the full site check because the load chart said it was fine. I think that attitude is how small mistakes turn into big problems, even on what seems like a routine lift. Do you always run through your full pre-op list no matter the pick size?

Skipping the site check is wild. What was his plan if the ground was soft or they had a buried line right there?

A contractor friend told me his biggest insurance claim came from hitting a fiber line nobody had marked. Cutting corners on the site visit just invites those kinds of disasters. It's a risk that never seems worth the saved time.

You ask what his plan was, but sometimes you just have to move fast. If the ground looks fine from past jobs nearby, and you call in a locate ticket, that's often enough. A full site visit for every small dig can kill your schedule and your bid. You accept some risk to keep things moving.
