Ran my load chart off the boom length instead of the radius for two weeks
Spent 14 days at a warehouse job in Fresno picking steel beams and kept coming in under capacity on the chart, felt good about it until the operator next to me asked why I was reading the left column. Turns out I'd been matching my boom length to the load weight the whole time instead of checking the radius first. Anyone else get lazy on chart reading when the picks feel light, or is it just me?
Ha, been there. Not for two whole weeks but close. I was doing a bunch of small picks off a flatbed and everything felt light so I stopped walking the chart line all the way out. Just glanced at the weight and ran with it. Then one day a guy on the crew points at my radius and asks what my boom angle even was. I had no clue. Felt like a rookie all over again. The thing that gets you is the picks feeling easy, so you stop checking and that is exactly when it bites you. Now I trace the whole line with a finger no matter how dumb it looks.
