Talked to an old timer who changed how I prep for lifts

Had a coffee with a retired crane guy named Pete last weekend. He said most young operators waste time checking the ground conditions too late, right before the lift. He convinced me to start scouting the site at least a day ahead, especially after rain. Tried it last Tuesday on a job near the river, found a soft spot I would have missed. Anyone else do early site checks or is that just overkill?

Ah man, I gotta Push Back a little on this one. I get what the old timer was saying, but scouting a full day ahead seems like overkill for most jobs. I've always done quick checks right before the lift and been just fine, you know? Ground conditions can change overnight anyway with weather or other crews messing around, so I'd rather just trust what I see in the moment.

Whoa, hold up, I actually get where you're coming from. But here's the thing I've noticed in life in general, not just with work stuff. People are so obsessed with being efficient and saving time that they skip the planning part, and then they end up having to redo crap or clean up a mess later. I see it with my buddies who try to take shortcuts on home projects or even just planning a road trip. A little upfront work usually saves a ton of hassle down the line, you know?
