Man, I used to think all those safety rules were just red tape. Seeing something like that happen for real, it just clicks. You don't cut corners after that.

Forget the rules for a second and look at who wrote them. Most safety stuff comes from someone getting hurt, or worse, so you're basically trusting their bad experience.
