TIL how much a bad boom angle indicator can throw off your picks
I spent three years on the same jobsite in Houston lifting HVAC units onto rooftops. My numbers were always off by a few hundred pounds, which I figured was just normal slop. Then last month I got a new load cell and boom angle sensor put in during a retrofit. The difference was night and day, I went from guessing to knowing exactly where my load was at. Turns out that old sensor was reading 2 degrees high on the boom angle, which shifts your capacity chart a ton. The weird part is the mechanic told me most guys never check their angle indicator calibration unless something breaks. Has anyone else found their crane was working harder than it needed to because of a bad sensor?

2 degrees high? That's actually plus 1 degree on some chart curves.
