Getting stuck in a small town during a storm showed me how to build tension

I was on a road trip through New England when a big storm made me stop in a tiny town. Sitting in a diner to wait, I heard two old friends argue about a lost bet (it was kinda funny). That made me see how everyday conflicts can fuel scenes in stories. Now I use travel delays as prompts to practice writing dialogue under pressure. It turns boring waits into creative gold.

Ever notice how much drama we ignore daily?

Yeah, we ignore a ton of it. I try to just focus on what's in front of me and let the background noise fade out. It saves a lot of mental energy.

Next time you're stuck waiting somewhere, just listen to how people talk to customer service on the phone. It's a master class in low grade conflict.
