Hot take: freewriting before prompts beats any prompt book, and I won't budge on this
Everyone in my writers group in Columbus swears by prompt decks, but I picked a plain spiral notebook and 10 minutes of freewriting first thing, and my draft count went from 2 a month to 9. The prompts were making me write for the prompt instead of for myself, so the stories all sounded the same. Anyone else ditch prompts on purpose, or am I the only one in here doing it this way?
Nine drafts a month is great, but that does not prove prompts are the problem. Plenty of writers use prompt decks and still sound like themselves, because the prompt is just a warmup, not a rulebook. When I get a prompt like "write about a door that won't open," I jot ten minutes of freewriting on it, then toss the prompt and keep whatever felt real. The tool is not making your stories sound the same, treating the prompt like a checklist is. Maybe you just needed a change of routine, not a whole new method.
