My writing group gave me the same prompt 4 weeks in a row, and on week 3 it actually worked
We meet Tuesdays at the library in Ames, and I finally just wrote the same diner scene three different ways instead of staring at a blank page. Anyone else find that repeating a prompt beats waiting around for a fresh idea?
Doesn't it feel like the blank page is the real enemy, not the prompt? I get the same thing in my group and it drives me nuts. Staring at nothing for 20 minutes and then blaming the prompt is basically my whole Tuesday night. What you did makes total sense though, because writing the same scene three ways forces you to actually make choices instead of hunting for the perfect idea. Fresh ideas are way overrated, most of the time they just show up while you're already writing something bad. Your diner thing is proof that boring repetition can get you somewhere real. I might steal this and stop waiting for lightning to strike.
