Realized I've been writing my characters with the wrong emotional motivation for 3 years

I was halfway through my 4th draft when my beta reader asked me why my main character would even care about saving the kingdom since I never gave her a reason to like anyone in it, and I sat there for 20 minutes staring at the screen like a complete idiot lol.

But honestly, does every single story need a deep reason for the hero to care or can they just be the good guy?

Whoa wait, three YEARS of drafts based on the wrong motivation? That's like building a whole house on the wrong lot or something, I can't imagine the frustration. @abby_chen I think characters can just be the good guy sometimes, but only if the story's simple and fast, not for a deep kingdom-saving plot.
