That writer's retreat in Asheville where the facilitator told us to 'just write from the heart' without any structure
I sat through three days of prompts that were all about free association and emotional release, only to realize on the last morning that nobody in our group had produced a single finished scene or character sketch, and now I always ask what the specific goal of a workshop is before I sign up.

Kinda sounds like a paid group therapy session more than a writing workshop honestly.

Idk, @jamie794 might be onto something there. A buddy of mine signed up for a similar retreat in Sedona once and came back with three pages of musings about her chakras but zero actual story material. She said she spent the whole time trying to figure out what the facilitator even wanted us to take away from it.
