The guy at the Denver library writing group told me my prompt was too safe and I still think about it
I was at a free writing group in the basement of the Denver library off Broadway about 8 months ago, and I passed around a prompt sheet I'd made called 20 Questions for Your Character that I was pretty proud of. This older guy named Walt read the whole thing, set it down, and said "these are all questions the character already knows the answer to, give me the ones that scare them." So now I'm rebuilding my whole prompt list around secrets and lies instead of favorites and fears, and I'm wondering if anyone else has had a stranger hand them a better idea than any book ever did?
