Took me 3 days to figure out why my fantasy story felt flat

I kept skipping the 'character wants something specific' part of prompts and wondered why scenes had no tension. Has anyone else spent way too long on descriptions when you should have just been writing the first draft faster?

Stopped worrying about the perfect opening line and just wrote something stupid to start. The tension came later when I figured out what my character actually wanted. Fixed most of my flat scenes that way.

Started doing that too a while back when I was stuck on a scene for like three days. Ended up writing "The door opened and something happened" just to get words down. Turned out that dumb line led to a whole subplot I never planned for about a missing cat... The character just walked in and started looking for their pet, which told me more about them than any careful description ever would. Still not sure where the cat story is going but at least the scene has some life in it now.
