Appreciation post: I chose the local hardware store over the big box chain for a plumbing part
My water heater's pressure relief valve started leaking last Tuesday, and I had to pick between the local Ace Hardware or the Home Depot across town. I went with Ace, paid about $4 more for the same part, but the guy there spent 15 minutes explaining the proper torque and even gave me a spare gasket for free. Does anyone think the extra help at a small place is actually worth paying a bit more for sometimes?

Honestly, that extra cost adds up fast for me. The big box store has the same part number for less, and their online videos show the install steps. For a simple swap, saving the money feels like the smarter move every time.

But what happens when that part fails early? You're not just paying for the part, you're paying for the expert advice that makes sure it's the right fix and the warranty that backs it up. Saving a few bucks now can cost you more later.
